About the Artist:

TC Steveson’s journey as a Black abstract artist has often been an isolating one, as he is frequently the only Black artist showcasing abstract work in exhibitions.

His process is deeply hands-on—he builds his own panels, often repurposing wood to cut costs. Preferring to paint on paper, he adheres it to wooden panels using a weighted press before mounting the panel and applying layers of gesso for texture.

Steveson layers colors through a meticulous pentimento process, allowing underlying hues to emerge. Each coat is carefully dried, sanded, and buffed before the next is applied, refining the background until its full depth comes into focus. With the foundation set, he shifts to form and composition, intuitively balancing color, line, and texture to create movement and depth in his work.
