About the Artist:
Wendy Lowengrub creates abstract paintings, drawings, and constructions that explore the connections between the natural and urban worlds. Her work seeks out the organic within urban chaos and highlights recurring forms found in nature. She draws parallels between unexpected elements, such as a sidewalk crack resembling a mountain landscape or a tangled mass of seaweed evoking dendrites and capillaries. Using materials like pencil, paint, wire, and string, Wendy creates pieces that feel both vaguely familiar and distinctly ambiguous.
Color plays a thematic role in her work, inspired by moments such as a vibrant wildflower season, the deep blue underside of an iceberg, or the neutral tones where deserts meet urbanization. Translating her observations into abstraction, Wendy approaches her creative process as though constructing a mathematical proof—seeking simplicity and elegance to decode complexity. While her journey often includes detours and missteps, the final layer, piece of string, or line becomes the element that ultimately brings her work to completion.
