About the Artist:

Chai A’lilharder is a ceramicist and psychologist whose sculptural ceramic art explores the intersection of form, texture, and emotion. Combining wheel-throwing and hand-building techniques, Chai creates complex works that contrast texture, color, and the interplay of light and shadow. The long, meticulous making process not only provides technical challenges and creative joy but also serves as a cathartic means of expressing personal experiences and emotions. At times, this process becomes a window into feelings and insights previously unknown.

Chai’s work often embodies profound narratives. For example, The Rediscover of Water reflects an inward journey of hearing loss, cochlear implants, and the rediscovery of life’s auditory richness, capturing the intricate sounds of water’s trickle, splash, and gurgle. In contrast, Lumens and Intertwine represent outward explorations of form and metaphor. Lumens investigates tessellation and negative space, symbolizing the shedding of light into once-closed inner spaces. Intertwine reflects on healing and mending, exploring the act of closing open spaces both physically and emotionally.

Through their work, Chai aims to inspire viewers to observe objects and the processes behind their creation with greater curiosity and wonder. By evoking feelings, memories, and questions, Chai hopes their art will encourage audiences to reflect on their internal worlds and foster a deeper connection to themselves and the art around them.
