About the Artist:
Andi Benet is a lens-based artist working in San Francisco. As an artist, their practice explores perception, identity, and the interplay between them.
From a mixture of hypersensitivity, migraine aura, and synesthesia, their perception of reality is abnormal, ranging from hue shifts to double vision to hallucinations. In their work, they recreate this sensation—seeing and not believing—by distorting captured images via the use of supersaturated lighting, prisms, unusual film stocks, and multiple and long exposures.
Disabled, assigned female, and queer, they use thier own body as a tool in performative self-portraiture, as a means to reassert bodily autonomy. They find themselves drawn to questions of æsthetic as identity-marker, creating work featuring dreamlike, unreal archetypes.
They believe art belongs to everyone. advocate for experimentation, a DIY mentality, and the democratization of knowledge.
