HEL10SProject: Perpetual Departure
Solo Show by Henry Henry Riekena
Perpetual Departure is the title of a gallery show that featured several large-scale photodynamic paintings, and a one-night live painting and music performance. During the live show, I created an eponymous 8' x 12' light-sensitive painting while multi-instrumentalist/vocalist/producer Charles Darius played a 90-minute musical set, followed by another two hours with DJ JK-47. The performance began with flowy, emotive strokes, and progressed through layers of intense geometry and contrasting swirls, before culminating with a blacklight composition based on American Steel's original winged-star logo. The painting was completed in the space with final details over the following week.
The show was a tribute to the American Steel Studios complex, where Henry has worked since 2010, and whose future is in doubt after being sold for the second time in four years.
